Season 1 is a closed anthology: Cohle and Hart solved (and complicated) the Louisiana murder cult case.

Rust Cohle and Marty Hart's partnership ended in violence, then a bitter reunion years later to finish the case.

The Yellow King / Carcosa mythos and the Tuttle network were exposed enough to end the central mystery.

If you finished Season 1, you saw the 1995 investigation and the 2012 return. The finale resolved the Dora Lange case's killers and left Cohle and Hart scarred but alive.

Anthology rule: Season 2 does not continue those lives. Prep for S2 is mostly 'you can start fresh' plus optional S1 closure notes.
