Season 1 opens on a 1995 ritual murder in Louisiana: Dora Lange, posed in a cane field with antlers and a spiral. Rust Cohle and Marty Hart are the CID pair.
The season is dual-timeline from the first hour: 2012 detectives Papania and Gilbough interview Marty about a new killing that rhymes with Lange.
Cohle is a Texas transfer who lives like a monk with a six-pack. Marty sells a family-man front. Carcosa is not found. Ledoux is not the hunt yet.
A Tuttle revival sits near the dump site. Power already has a chapel and a school system. Nothing is proven in the open.
Cohle talks like time is stacked, not lined up. Marty wants a normal house. That mismatch is the partnership from minute one.
The Ginger / Crusaders job is CID improvisation, not a clean warrant story. If the cookhouse goes wrong, there will be no pretty report.
Maggie is past pretending. The home plot is now as dangerous to Marty as the bayou.
Between Who Goes There and Form and Void: the cookhouse raid, Dewall on a mine, Marty killing Ledoux, a cover story, medals, Cohle leaving CID, Maggie detonating the marriage, then the 2012 hunt back to the Childress house.
Papania and Gilbough spend 2012 trying to trap the old partners in a lie. The labyrinth is not theirs. They remain the interview frame.
Hospital close: both men alive, partnership repaired, stars against the dark. That is the S1 emotional end-state. It is not a cliff into the same case.
